This model use an Intel ICH6-M SATA/PATA
controller for the system hard disk. This causes several complications
for Linux installation.
Linux kernels prior to 2.6.16 (ata_piix) and 2.6.19 (ahci) do not
support SATA devices trouble-free.
Debian
Etch 4.0 does not recognize the CD/DVD-device while
installing the operating system. Therefore an installation is
impossible.
Debian
Lenny (the testing distribution)
will install itself correctly. After the first reboot the root
filesystem (/dev/sdaX) will not be found and the system does not boot.
With Knoppix
5.2
the system boots, if you disabled ACPI before (boot option acpi=off).
The sound is disabled, if you boot Knoppix.

7.04 Feisty Fawn stops with kernel panic, before starting the
installation.

the installation.
July 2007: You can find many
proposals for
solution in the internet. Nothing worked for me, so I had to surrender!
I gave this laptop back to trader.

The ata_piix
SATA driver grabs ownership over the
IDE ports
when it is loaded, but does not support PATA ATAPI devices
such as the optical drives. Thus, if the ide
driver is compiled as a module and loaded after ata_piix,
the DVD drive will not be recognized by either driver.
